Louis Van Lint (Belgian, 1909-1986), Fauteuil vert, 1943. Canvas, 61 x 50 cm.
Louis Van Lint (December 25, 1909 - December 27, 1986) was a Belgian painter, major figure of the Belgian post-war abstraction.
Woman at a Window (probably 1510-30). Italian, North. Oil on wood. National Gallery, London.
During restoration in 1978, this painting was discovered to have been radically altered, modifying the figure’s appearance to reflect 19th-century taste and morality, perhaps with the intention of making it saleable. In its original state, the figure’s pronounced bust, sidelong glance and appearance at a window suggest that she might be a courtesan or a prostitute.
