The almost eight-foot-tall painting shows Marc Chagall balancing on the shoulders of his wife, Bella, his mouth grinning, his left hand raising a glass of wine to the sky.
The Russian artist’s colourful self-portrait, a celebration of his love for Bella, remained in his personal collection until he gifted it to Paris’s Musée National d’Art Moderne when it opened in 1947. nationalpost
